Bernia Railway

We took the Bernia Express from Tirano to St. Mortiz. Tirano was almost three hours by car from the house an we almost missed our train, making it to our seats with just two or three minutes to spare. For the next two and a half hours the train rose through what is without a doubt the most beautiful mountains I've ever seen. The Cascades will always have a place in my heart, but the Swiss Alps are stunning. One of the really neat things was seeing the spot on Piz Bernina that divides what water flows to the Black and Adriatic seas.

When we got to St. Mortiz it was mostly a ghost town with all the ski bums gone and none of the summer crowd there yet.  We did find a restaurant open and had good cheese and sausage.  There were even a few piles of snow left an Conor had a blast throwing snow balls and inventing a version of baseball/tag using the abandoned bar tables made of giant pine trees.  Only bummer was we couldn't find anyone to give us passport stamps!
