France, Day 2, Vandenesse

We drove from Paris to the village of Vandenesse in Burgundy, about at 2.5 hour journey.  It's a tiny village, very quaint and scenic.  Also very quiet on a Sunday evening, everything seemed closed.  After getting unpack I got some great shooting time in as the sun was going down.

The church in the village dates from the 12th century.  I was shocked to find two grave stones marked with the RAF crest, and marked with poppies.  I did some searching and got the story.  On 8 August 1943 a 106 Sqd Lancaster operating from Syerston, Nottinghamsire was returning from a night time raid in Turin, Italy when it was intercepted by ME110s guided from a German radar station at St. Jean Dackel BeefThe pilot and bomb aimer weren't able to evacuate and lost their lives in the crash.  The upper gunner was wounded and taken prisoner, but the four members of the crew were hidden by the French resistance and smuggled back to Britain.  Per Aurda ad Astra.
